Coping with change

Break ups, job loss, friendship loss, illness, grief. When I’ve gone through times of change, I used to feel lost and overwhelmed. Over time, I’ve found my own way to roll with it - although it’s not easy, I trust myself to find a way through.

Change is not always just one thing. It is not just scary uncertainty, although this can be the overwhelming feeling for a while. It can also provide a turning point and space for something new, which can sometimes be better than what we had before.

We can learn to roll with it, because we have the gift of adaptability. We can figure things out as we go, become unstuck, and move forward with flexibility.

We can learn to walk on shifting sands.

How I cope with change

These are my favourite ways to cope with change:

📋 List everything that is not changing, to give myself a sense of security while things around me are moving.

🤔 Observe myself, to see what I can do to adapt

🗑️ Leave behind what no longer works

😕 Talk about it, and let myself feel

🕰️ Wait it out, and see what things look like when the dust settles.

Are you going through change? Have a think about what would help you get through this time.

If you’re going through overwhelming change and want to talk it through with a therapist, you can find me at cosytherapy.com. I offer a free 15 minute initial chat, where you can get to know me and we can talk about what’s happening for you.

Warmth and wishes
