ADHD in the therapy room

As I’m specialising in ADHD, I am always learning new ways to support my clients in therapy. There are always so many things to write on this topic, so I’m sticking to a few key points today.

For my ADHD brains out there, here’s some ways I shape my therapy to better suit you:

🌱 Understanding neurodiversity, as well as an exploration of frustrations: Coming to terms with ADHD can be a journey, and it’s different for everyone. I create a space where you can explore your relationship to ADHD, including the strengths and frustrations. You can feel however you want to about your brain.

💡 Working at a rapid pace: You may move quickly from one topic to another, so I keep up with the pace of your brain. Some people may face criticism for this in the workplace or in the family - but in my room, we can go in any direction you want to, as quickly as your brain moves. You can also unmask by allowing yourself to fidget, walk about, express strong emotions or thoughts - anything that feels right to you.

🫶 Neurodivergent life choices: Sometimes, you might hold a lot of stress from trying to fit yourself into a neurotypical lifestyle - from your choice in work or study, to your daily routine. It can alleviate some stress to consider life choices according to what most benefits your brain, including your need for rest, play, distraction and reward. Letting go of what you think you ‘should’ be doing, and moving towards what actually feels helpful, can unlock a door to a more fulfilling life.

💪 Techniques and tips if you want them: I’m always happy to explain techniques to work with motivation and executive function for ADHD. These avoid masking, instead providing ADHD-supportive tools that maximise your strengths and benefit you in areas where you struggle. This may include tools to visualise time, planning backwards from a deadline, undoing perfectionism and creating systems to remember tasks. Any work goes according to what you want to do. And we can prioritise what’s actually important to you.

I hope this was interesting. If you’re looking to work with an ADHD-trained therapist, you are welcome to book a free 15 minute intro chat where we can explore what you’re looking for from therapy. For more information and to book online, you can find me at cosytherapy.com

Warmth and wishes,
