What does mental health recovery look like?

If you have a history of trauma, you might be struggling with your mental health. This kind of background can massively affect how you think about yourself, your sense of safety, and your place in the world.
At times, you may wonder if mental health recovery is possible. How can we build a better life when things have become so difficult?

Here’s a few things I know about recovery:
🫶 If ‘Just get over it’ worked, it would have worked by now.
If these memories are sitting around for you, or you’re feeling low and you don’t know why, it may be that you need to process some of that past stuff. Take it at your own pace, and talk to a therapist or support group, to create a reflective and supportive process.
🤨 The journey to recovery never goes how you expect it to
Change is not always straightforward - sometimes it feels like two steps forward, and one step back. You learn things as you go, but it can be hard to have set backs and disappointments along the way.
You may also need to experiment with things you’re avoiding - deliberately feeling your feelings, being kind to yourself, trying out journalling, meditation or support groups. It’s good to keep an open mind and let yourself explore many paths to healing.
🌱 Work and change may be needed, but you can take it one step at a time.

You might start to realise that you need to let go of old habits, change your workplace, or move away from harmful people, in order to feel better. Preparing for change and mindset work can help. Take it one small step at a time.
☀️ Recovery looks different for everyone
Each of us may be working towards a different type of recovery - looking for emotional steadiness, freedom from painful relationships, or relief from self-sabotage. Start from where you are, try a few things, and see what’s possible.
