Gender adventures

As an online queer counsellor, I often work with trans people. We explore many things, and sometimes that includes their sense of gender and their process of transition. I am nonbinary myself, and I recognise the stresses of gender dysphoria.

Sometimes, we may move around different parts of the gender spectrum as we develop. Even when we have a clear gender identity, it may not always feel comfortable to be part of that gendered experience.

It’s important for therapists to meet you where you’re at, and to move with you as you change and expand your idea of self. Being empathetic means being present with you on your journey, and not holding on to an idea of who you should be or what a gender should be.

As a therapist, I can help you explore your thinking, and consider new ways of being. We can unpack what’s happening for you, and how you are feeling, and consider dismantling barriers to being your true self. Through the process, you might clarify your direction and gender. You may continue on your journey, but have a better understanding of self. I believe in the freedom to try out being who you are.

A great thing to do for clients and therapists, is to understand your own relationship to the gender in which you live.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself:

How do I see myself as being a person of a particular gender/no gender?

How do I express my gender?

What messages have I received about what gender I should be?

How do I see other people from my gender identity?

Does anything bother me about other people’s genders? What is it that troubles me?

What do I find restrictive about my gender? What do I feel I have to do, in order to fit in to this gender?

If I were a different gender, what would I see in myself or others?

If you’re looking to work with a therapist who’s trans-inclusive and ready to help you explore your gender experience, you can find me at cosytherapy.com. I offer a free 15 minute intro chat, where you can get to know me and talk me through what’s happening for you.

Warmth and wishes,
